Daly Building

The Daly Building, once a prominent department store and office space in Ottawa, was the city's first department store, opening in 1905. Designed in the unique Chicago Style, it became a government office in 1921 but faced years of neglect, leading to its controversial demolition in the early 1990s. This marked the first destruction of a designated heritage building in Ottawa since the introduction of heritage guidelines. The site remained vacant for over a decade before being transformed into a luxury apartment building in 2004, sparking discussions about urban development and heritage preservation.
