Indianapolis Motor Speedway Yard of Bricks

A 3-foot-wide strip of the original 1909 brick racing surface is preserved at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway start/finish line and is commonly called the 'Yard of Bricks.' The rest of the track was paved over, but a full yard of the original bricks remains exposed and additional bricks are displayed around the grounds. Winners of the Indianapolis 500 follow the longstanding tradition of 'kissing the bricks' at the finish line.
