Betty Willis and the Welcome sign design

Graphic designer Betty Willis created the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign in 1959 for Western Neon. Her signature appears on the south side of the sign, and she declined to trademark or copyright the design so it could be freely used by the city and visitors. The sign remains a frequently photographed landmark and a recurring subject of local jokes about Las Vegas imagery and kitsch.
