Alcatraz Island (historic federal penitentiary)

Alcatraz Island, accessed by ferries that depart from Pier 33, served as a federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963 and held inmates such as Al Capone and Robert Stroud. The island also contains earlier military fortifications and the first lighthouse on the U.S. West Coast. Today Alcatraz is managed as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is open to the public for guided and self-guided tours.
