Hiram M. Chittenden (Ballard) Locks (salmon traffic joke)

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks connect the Lake Washington Ship Canal to Puget Sound and include a fish ladder that allows migrating salmon to pass. The locks were completed in 1917 and are a frequent spot to observe salmon runs during late summer and fall. Locals often jokingly compare peak salmon migrations at the locks to Seattle commuter traffic.
