Chicano Park murals and 1970 community occupation

Chicano Park in Barrio Logan sits beneath the San Diego–Coronado Bridge and contains a large concentration of outdoor murals created by Chicano artists and community members beginning in 1970. The park was established after community organizers and residents staged an extended occupation and protest to prevent development and secure the land for a public park. The site’s murals depict local and national Chicano history and cultural themes and the park remains a focal point for Chicano cultural events and activism.
