Neponsit Beach Hospital

Neponsit Beach Hospital, located in Queens, New York, was originally established in 1915 as a tuberculosis sanatorium for children. It later treated military veterans during and after World War II before closing in 1955 due to a decline in tuberculosis cases. The hospital was situated near Jacob Riis Park, offering patients access to beach recreation and sunlight. It featured a distinctive 'U'-shaped building designed by the renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead & White, along with murals by WPA artists. After its closure, it served as a nursing home until 1998 and was demolished in 2023. The site is now accessible via local bus routes and is near popular beaches, including areas frequented by the LGBTQ+ community and nudists.
