The guardhouse on Sennaya Square

The guardhouse on Sennaya Square is a historic building in Saint Petersburg, originally constructed in the 18th century and rebuilt between 1818 and 1820 by architect Vikenty Beretti. It stands as the only typical guardhouse of its kind in Russia. The site has a rich history, including the arrest of famed author Fyodor Dostoevsky in 1874 and its role as a City Sanitary-Analytical Station from 1886, where products sold at the square were inspected. Over the years, it has served various purposes, including a grocery store and an intercity bus station, and currently houses the City Tourist Information Bureau. Architecturally, it features a symmetrical facade with a portico supported by Tuscan columns, harmonizing with the nearby Savior on Sennaya church, making it a notable stop for tourists and researchers alike.
