Youngerman Block

The Youngerman Block is a historic three-story commercial building located in downtown Des Moines, Iowa, showcasing a blend of Italianate architecture and Art Deco detailing. Constructed in 1876 by architect William Foster for local builder Conrad Youngerman, the building features intricately detailed arched windows and a distinctive pressed metal cornice. Youngerman, a prominent stonemason and city alderman, played a significant role in the development of Des Moines' architecture. The ground floor has been remodeled with Art Deco motifs, contrasting with the original upper levels. The Youngerman Block was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, making it a noteworthy stop for tourists and researchers interested in architectural history and local heritage.
