Pier 39 Sea Lions

Sea lions began hauling out on the docks at Pier 39 in 1990 and have remained a recurring attraction there since. The group of California sea lions is regularly observed from public viewing areas on the pier and is monitored by local wildlife agencies. Their presence has become a distinctive feature of the Fisherman's Wharf waterfront and a widely photographed element of San Francisco's coastal culture.
