Lincoln Memorial (neoclassical monument)

Designed by architect Henry Bacon and completed in 1922, the Lincoln Memorial is modeled on a Greek Doric temple and is a prominent example of early-20th-century neoclassical monumental architecture in Washington, D.C. The memorial's exterior has 36 Doric columns, one for each state in the Union at the time of Lincoln's death. Inside, Daniel Chester French's 19-foot seated Lincoln sculpture occupies the central chamber, with the texts of the Gettysburg Address and Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address carved into the interior walls.
