Site where Abraham Lincoln died (Petersen House)

Abraham Lincoln was carried across the street from Ford's Theatre to the Petersen House after being shot and died there on the morning of April 15, 1865; his death was pronounced in a second-floor bedroom. Lincoln's body was then moved to the White House briefly before being transported to Springfield, Illinois, for burial. The Petersen House at this address preserves the room where Lincoln died and is operated by the National Park Service.
