Demarest Building

The Demarest Building, once a four-story structure located at 339 Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, was designed in a modified Beaux Arts style and originally served as a showroom for luxury horse carriages. Notable for housing the world's first electric elevator, the building faced a significant fire in 1893 and was later repurposed into retail units. Its proximity to iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Waldorf Astoria made it a notable site in the area. Despite efforts by preservationists to save it, the building was ultimately deemed too altered to qualify for landmark status and was demolished in 2022 to make way for a new mixed-use development.
