One Liberty Place breaking the William Penn height tradition

One Liberty Place, completed in 1987 and designed by Helmut Jahn, was the first building in Philadelphia to exceed the height of the William Penn statue atop City Hall, ending an informal 'gentlemen's agreement' that had limited skyscraper heights in the city. Its completion marked a new era of high-rise construction in Center City and changed the skyline profile. The tower remains a prominent example of late-20th-century commercial skyscraper design in Philadelphia.
