Fort Wayne casemates and magazines

Fort Wayne, a 19th-century masonry fortification on Detroit's west riverfront, includes below-grade casemates, powder magazines, and tunnel-like service passages that were part of its defensive design. The fort was constructed beginning in the 1840s and the subterranean spaces were used for ammunition storage and protected troop movement. Portions of these underground areas are visible to visitors during tours and are documented in the site's National Register and interpretive materials.
