Lombard Street - The Crooked One-Block

The famous one-block crooked section of Lombard Street between Hyde and Leavenworth features eight sharp hairpin turns and was constructed to reduce the steepness of the hillside for vehicle traffic. Installed in the early 1920s, the brick-paved switchback block has become an internationally recognized residential roadway and a frequent tourist attraction. The block remains a public street used by local residents and by tourists driving or walking the zigzag section.
