Wanamaker Organ and John Wanamaker's Department Store

The Wanamaker Organ, installed in the Wanamaker Building when John Wanamaker operated his department store, is housed at 1300 Market Street (now Macy's Center City) and is one of the largest functioning pipe organs in the world with more than 28,000 pipes. John Wanamaker, a 19th-century retail pioneer and civic figure in Philadelphia, commissioned the organ and used concerts as part of the store's public programming. The organ continues to be played for concerts and events at the site.
