The Peacock Room at the Freer Gallery of Art

The Freer Gallery of Art, part of the Smithsonian Institution, houses James McNeill Whistler's Peacock Room, a late-19th-century, room-sized decorative interior that Charles Lang Freer purchased and had installed in the museum. The room is a singular example of a transplanted and conserved interior within a national museum collection. Because it occupies a specific gallery room rather than being a freestanding object, visitors sometimes overlook it while touring the National Mall museums.
