Old Hemp Factory of Edessa

The Old Hemp Factory in Edessa, Greece, was the largest of its kind in the country, established in 1908 to produce ropes from Indian hemp. It thrived from 1928 to 1940, employing 150 workers and supplying various regions in Greece. After its closure in 1966 due to financial difficulties, the factory was repurposed in 1997 as a Recreation and Education Center, becoming part of the Edessa Water Museum. Although it operated for 17 years, it closed again in 2014 due to high maintenance costs. Plans for a new industrial museum and event space are underway, aiming to preserve its historical significance and promote cultural activities.
