Young Men's Institute Building

The Young Men's Institute Building, or YMI Building, is a historic cultural landmark in Asheville, North Carolina, designed by architect Richard Sharp Smith and completed in 1893. Originally established to support the African American community, it served as a multipurpose space for meetings, performances, and businesses. Funded by George Vanderbilt, the YMI aimed to demonstrate the self-governance capabilities of the black community post-Civil War. After a period of decline, it was restored in 1980 as the YMI Cultural Center, which now hosts various cultural programs and exhibitions, preserving African American heritage in the region. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features permanent exhibitions of art and artifacts, making it a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in African American history.
