Asch Building / Brown Building - Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire site

The Asch Building at 23–29 Washington Place was the site of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire on March 25, 1911, an industrial disaster that resulted in the deaths of 146 garment workers. The tragedy exposed hazardous factory conditions and directly contributed to the passage of improved workplace-safety laws and the growth of labor-union organizing in New York and nationally. The building, now known as the Brown Building, remains a documented historic site associated with early-20th-century labor and social-reform history.
