IRT City Hall Station removed from regular service

The original IRT City Hall Station opened in 1904 as the elegant southern loop terminus of the first New York City subway line but was closed to regular passenger service in 1945 because its curved platform could not accommodate newer, longer trains. The station structure remains intact beneath City Hall Park and is preserved as an architectural relic of the subway's early era. It is occasionally opened for guided tours and special events but is not part of the regular transit system.
