Houston Astrodome

Opened in 1965 as the Harris County Domed Stadium, the Houston Astrodome was the world's first multi-purpose domed sports stadium. It served as the home of the Houston Astros (MLB) and Houston Oilers (AFL/NFL) and originally seated over 60,000 spectators. Because natural grass struggled to grow under the dome, the venue received one of the first major installations of artificial turf (AstroTurf) in 1966. The Astrodome is located within NRG Park and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark.
