City name inspired by the mythical phoenix

The city of Phoenix was named in 1868 for the mythical phoenix, symbolizing a new city rising from the ruins of earlier indigenous canal-centered Hohokam settlements. Darrell Duppa, an early settler, suggested the name when the new agricultural community replaced the former Hohokam canals. The association with the mythical bird remains central to Phoenix's civic identity.
