Pier 39 sea lions

California sea lions began hauling out on the floating docks at Pier 39 in 1989 following the Loma Prieta earthquake and have remained a regular presence since then. They congregate on the marina’s floating platforms and are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The animals’ noisy behavior and large numbers are frequently photographed and shared in viral videos and travel posts.
