Kaufmann's

Kaufmann's was a historic department store that began in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1871, founded by the Kaufmann brothers. It grew to become a prominent regional chain, known for its flagship store, 'The Big Store,' which featured a famous outdoor clock that became a popular meeting spot. The store was influential in the local retail landscape, absorbing several competitors and expanding significantly over the years. Notably, it was owned by Edgar J. Kaufmann, who also commissioned the iconic Fallingwater house from architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Although Kaufmann's was eventually absorbed into larger retail chains and the name was retired in 2006, the legacy of the store continues, with the original building being redeveloped as 'Kaufmann's Grand on Fifth.'
