Sharpstown Mall's rise and decline

Sharpstown Mall opened in 1961 as one of Houston's earliest enclosed shopping malls and was developed by Frank Sharp. The mall originally featured major department store anchors including Joske's and Montgomery Ward. Over the late 20th and early 21st centuries the property experienced significant tenant and anchor departures, high vacancy, and periods of partial closure. In the 2010s and later the complex has been the subject of redevelopment proposals and rebranding efforts as stakeholders worked to repurpose the site.
