Academy of Music - 19th-century opera house

Opened in 1857, the Academy of Music on South Broad Street is the oldest opera house in the United States still used for its original purpose. The ornate Second Empire–style theatre has hosted opera, ballet, and civic performances for more than a century and serves as a principal venue for Opera Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Ballet. Its location on the Avenue of the Arts makes it a longstanding cultural landmark in the Center City performing-arts corridor.
