Naval Hospital Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Naval Hospital, opened in 1935, was the first high-rise hospital built by the U.S. Navy, featuring a striking 15-story Art Deco tower with 650 beds. It served as a vital medical facility during World War II, specializing in amputation and orthopedic services for veterans. The complex included 56 buildings set in a landscaped campus, showcasing classical Beaux-Arts architecture. However, by the late 1970s, it faced declining use and was ultimately closed in 1993, with demolition occurring in 2001. Today, remnants of the site have been repurposed into office buildings, preserving the Art Deco style of the original naval residential structures.
