Washington Monument Masonic cornerstone ceremony

In 1848 Freemasons performed a public cornerstone‑laying ceremony at the Washington Monument, depositing ceremonial items and performing Masonic rites; contemporary newspapers and monument records document the event. The project experienced a long suspension in the 1850s–1870s, and later resumption of work altered some original plans. Popular myths have since exaggerated claims about hidden Masonic symbolism or secret treasures in the cornerstone, but primary records note only the documented ceremonial items and proceedings.
