Congress Avenue Bridge bat colony

Mexican free-tailed bats roost in the crevices beneath the Congress Avenue Bridge and emerge each evening at dusk. Estimates of the colony size vary by year, with counts commonly reported in the hundreds of thousands to as many as 1.5 million bats at peak seasons. The nightly emergence from spring through fall is a widely observed urban wildlife spectacle and is monitored by local biologists and Austin Parks & Recreation.
