Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial 'Stone of Hope'

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the Tidal Basin features the 'Stone of Hope,' a roughly 30-foot-tall white granite sculpture of Dr. King carved by Lei Yixin and emerging from a cut 'Mountain of Despair.' The memorial opened in 2011 and includes engraved excerpts from King's speeches and writings on surrounding stone panels. The memorial's street number, 1964, was chosen to reference the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
