St. Elizabeths Hospital and Ezra Pound's confinement

St. Elizabeths Hospital, established in the 19th century as the first federally operated psychiatric hospital in the United States, opened its main campus in Southeast Washington in the 1850s. The poet Ezra Pound was confined there from 1945 until his release in 1958 after being found unfit to stand trial for treason; his confinement is well documented. The hospital's historic West Campus includes vacant and repurposed buildings, and the site figures in local lore and anecdotal ghost stories that are treated as such by historians.
