Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (Ballard Locks) and fish ladder

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, commonly called the Ballard Locks, opened in 1917 and connect Puget Sound with the Lake Washington Ship Canal. The complex at this site includes a fish ladder that allows migrating salmon to bypass the locks; public viewing windows are used seasonally to observe salmon runs. The site also contains the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Garden and is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The locks are a long-standing local spot for boat and wildlife viewing as well as educational programs.
