The Phillips Collection - first American museum of modern art

The Phillips Collection, founded by Duncan Phillips and opened to the public in 1921, is widely regarded as America’s first museum of modern art. Housed in the Phillips family’s former residence, the museum presents a permanent collection of modern and contemporary paintings and sculpture organized as salon-style installations across domestic-scale rooms and galleries. The museum also maintains a small outdoor sculpture garden adjacent to its galleries.
