Fairmount Water Works and the Falls of the Schuylkill

The Fairmount Water Works occupies the site of the historic Falls of the Schuylkill, a natural rocky ledge where the river drops and which marks Philadelphia's fall line. The 19th‑century Water Works complex was engineered to divert and manage the river's flow to supply the city, altering the natural channel and creating an engineered geographic feature within the urban landscape. The site now includes an interpretive center and sits along Kelly Drive beside the Schuylkill River.
