Fort Point Civil War casemates

Fort Point is a masonry seacoast fort completed in 1861 at the southern side of the Golden Gate. It was built during the Civil War to defend San Francisco Bay and contains vaulted casemates, magazines, and gun rooms that functioned as fortified bunkers. The National Park Service preserves these underground and semi-underground chambers and offers public interpretation on site. The fort sits directly beneath the southern approach of the Golden Gate Bridge.
