Smithsonian Institution Building (The Castle)

Designed by architect James Renwick Jr. and completed in 1855, the Smithsonian Castle is an early example of Gothic Revival (Norman) architecture in Washington, D.C. It was the Smithsonian Institution's first building and historically housed its offices and collections. The red Seneca sandstone landmark fronts the National Mall and continues to serve as the Smithsonian's visitor information center.
