S. Hata Building

The S. Hata Building, a historic structure in Hilo, Hawaii, was built in 1912 by Japanese businessman Hata Sadanosuke. Originally serving as a retail space for Japanese goods, it reflects the upward mobility of the Japanese population in Hawaii. The building is notable for its reinforced concrete design, which was rare at the time, and features a mix of specialty shops, professional offices, and a restaurant. It survived significant historical events, including World War II and the 1946 tsunami, and has been renovated to house local businesses. The building also hosted the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center, showcasing the Leeward Islands' marine environment. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it stands as a testament to the cultural and economic contributions of Japanese immigrants in Hawaii.
