Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary and Robert Stroud

Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary operated on Alcatraz Island from 1934 to 1963 and held several high-profile inmates. Robert Stroud, often called the "Birdman of Alcatraz," was incarcerated at Alcatraz during the 1940s and 1950s and is one of the prison's best-known prisoners, though his bird research primarily occurred earlier at Leavenworth. Alcatraz Island is now a National Recreation Area site with museum interpretation of the prison's history.
