University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (Penn Museum)

Founded in 1887 and housed in a purpose-built building completed in 1899, the Penn Museum is one of the United States' earliest museums dedicated to archaeology and anthropology. Its late-19th-century building was constructed to hold large archaeological collections and associated laboratories and continues to function as a museum, research, and conservation facility. The museum's long-running excavation archives and climate-controlled storage illustrate the development of museum collection infrastructure over more than a century.
