The Alamo (Mission San Antonio de Valero)

Founded in 1718 as a Spanish mission, Mission San Antonio de Valero later became known as the Alamo. It was the site of the 1836 Battle of the Alamo, when Mexican forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna overran the Texian defenders on March 6, 1836. Today the compound operates as a museum and is one of San Antonio's best-known historic landmarks.
