Coit Tower Murals

Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill contains a large series of fresco murals painted in 1934 by a group of artists working under New Deal–era art programs; the murals depict scenes of California life, labor, and industry during the Great Depression. The tower itself was funded by a bequest from Lillie Hitchcock Coit and completed in 1933, and the murals remain a notable example of public art from the era. The site is both an architectural landmark and a public art destination.
