Howard Theatre - historic African American performance venue (opened 1910)

The Howard Theatre, opened in 1910 on U Street, is one of the city’s historic performance venues that became a national center for African American entertainers during the 20th century. The theatre hosted performers such as Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Marvin Gaye and was restored and reopened for performances in 2012 after periods of decline and renovation. It remains a documented landmark in Washington’s Black cultural and musical history.
