Hygieostatic Bat Roost

The Hygieostatic Bat Roost, located in Kendall County, Texas, is a historic structure built in 1918 to promote bat habitation as a natural method of controlling mosquito populations. Designed by Dr. Charles A. R. Campbell and commissioned by former San Antonio Mayor Pro Tem Albert Steves, this unique 30-foot tall pyramid-shaped tower features dormers for bat entry and a raised concrete base for guano collection. The roost's name derives from Greek, meaning 'health standing.' It is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, making it a notable site for tourists and researchers interested in innovative public health solutions and local history.
