Rhode Island Auditorium

The Rhode Island Auditorium was a historic indoor arena located in Providence, Rhode Island, that opened in 1926 and could accommodate 5,300 spectators. It served as a vibrant venue for various events, including hosting the BAA's Providence Steamrollers and the Providence Reds ice hockey team until 1972. The auditorium was notable for hosting 28 of boxing legend Rocky Marciano's fights and events like the Ice Capades and concerts. Despite facing financial challenges during the Great Depression, it was saved by local industrialist Malcolm Greene Chace. The venue gained notoriety in 1969 after a riot at a Sly and the Family Stone concert led to a temporary ban on rock concerts in the city. The auditorium was demolished in 1989, and the site is now occupied by parking for The Miriam Hospital, with a plaque commemorating the Rhode Island Reds hockey team placed by the Rhode Island Reds Heritage Society in 2009.
