Slave Lodge, Cape Town

The Slave Lodge, one of Cape Town's oldest buildings, has a rich history that spans over three centuries. Originally built in 1679 by the Dutch East India Company to house enslaved individuals, it accommodated up to 500 people from diverse regions including East Africa and India. After its closure as a slave lodge in 1811, the building served various roles, including government offices and the Old Supreme Court. In the 1960s, it was transformed into the South African Cultural History Museum, showcasing artifacts related to the region's history. Today, known as the Slave Lodge Museum, it is part of the Iziko Museums of South Africa, offering visitors insights into the complex social history of the area.
