Emancipation Park (founded by formerly enslaved leaders)

Emancipation Park was purchased in 1872 by formerly enslaved Houston residents Jack Yates, Richard Brock, and Richard Allen for the purpose of hosting Juneteenth celebrations. It is recognized as one of the oldest public parks in Texas created by and for the Black community and has served as a cultural and civic center for Houston's Fourth Ward for over a century. The park has undergone restorations while retaining its historic role in commemorating emancipation.
