First Indianapolis 500-mile automobile race (1911)

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosted the inaugural Indianapolis 500 on May 30, 1911, a 500-mile open-wheel automobile race that established the 500-mile format as a major motorsport event. Ray Harroun won the first Indianapolis 500, driving a Marmon Wasp, and the race quickly became an annual endurance and speed competition of international significance. The 1911 event at the Speedway is widely cited as a technological proving ground for early automotive engineering and race strategy. The Speedway itself opened in 1909 as a purpose-built automobile racing facility.
