Hiram M. Chittenden (Ballard) Locks and fish ladder

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, commonly called the Ballard Locks, opened in 1917 and allow vessel traffic to pass between Puget Sound and the Lake Washington Ship Canal. The site includes a fish ladder that enables migrating salmon and other fish to bypass the locks and travel between saltwater and freshwater habitats. The locks are also surrounded by the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Garden and are a nationally recognized example of early 20th-century maritime engineering.
